Give It Up

Has anyone out there ever fasted? Or, better asked, fasted from something for spiritual reasons? By spiritual I me to be closer to God and to grow deeper in your relationship to him? Just wondering...what say you?

Comments:
Yes, but not often. I used to think it was because there is so much to do, so I couldn't take the time. But more and more I realize I must arrange my schedule so I can make the time. I am still working on getting more out of fasting, and at the time it is not a strong suit for me... God is patient and gives strength where we are weak, so I will expect to grow in this area.

Yea - but need to do it more often. If we were to really take the examples of the early church, we'd take fasting more seriously. When fasting, it makes me realize a couple of things:
1) How much of a glutton I really am
2) How often I think of food
3) How weak we really are in the flesh
4) How I should feel toward the WORD with respect to hunger and thirsting
5) How much our senses are deadend by being satisfied by food. There is a natural sense heightening that comes about through fasting; it's a direct relationship to the fact that one's body becomes on high alert for the presence of food.

I really believe that this is one of the areas we aught to work harder in as a brotherhood. I think the denial of self in the most basic regard makes one gain perspective on those things in this world that one really needs.

On another note, I listened to the November 7th and 8th issue of "For faith and Family" today which hosted Pam Stenzel. This was a talk to teens on the Price of Sex before marriage. I really enjoyed the talk, and know that I could have used this talk more often when I was a teen. Thought I'd pass along the info in the event you wanted to bring her in as a "Special Guest" to the teens. Here is a link if you want to listen http://www.faithandfamilyradio.com/index.php?id=5

Thanks for all the work you do dude! You are an inspiration and a wonderful worker in the kingdom!

I think fasting can be from media outlets and things other than food. What better way to hear the still smal voice of God than to fast from noise such as TV, radio, and the Internet?

Jessie in comment #2 above suggested this website:

I listened and am passing it on outside this blog site, but want to thank Jessie for mentioning it.

I've only tried to once. Maybe I wasn't doing it right, but I was so sick about half way through the day and I don't think it brought me any closer to God, just made me concentrate on how horrible I felt with out any nurtrients.

P.S. Thanks Chris for playing the guitar for me last night. You were FABULOUS!
